MT. LHOTSE EXPEDITION (8516M)
60 Days
OVERVIEW
Mt. Lhotse is the fourth-highest mountain in the world, with an elevation of 8,516 meters (27,940 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and Tibet. Its long east-west crest is located immediately south of Mount Everest, and the South Col, a vertical ridge that never drops below 8,000m, connects the summits of the two mountains. Lhotse has three summits: Lhotse Main 8516m, Lhotse Shar 8383m, and Lhotse Middle or East 8413m. A deep scar, an icy gully known as the Lhotse Couloir, marks The West Face of Lhotse; the couloir is the crucial test to the Lhotse climb, mainly because the climbing conditions of the couloir are affected by weather and seasonal snowfall.
Mt. Lhotse was first summited on May 18, 1956, by a Swiss team consisting of Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger. They climbed the mountain via the West Ridge, which is the same route that was used by the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. Since the first ascent, there have been many successful ascents of Mount Lhotse, with the majority of climbers using the South Col route, which is the same route used to climb Mount Everest. The south face of Lhotse is known for being steep and technically challenging, and it has only been successfully climbed a few times.
There are many reasons why people choose to climb mountains, and Mount Lhotse is no exception. Climbing Mt. Lhotse is a significant challenge, and it requires a high level of physical fitness, technical climbing skills, and mental fortitude. The mountain is known for its steep and challenging south face, and the thin air and extreme altitude make it a demanding climb.
The 14mount8000, Lhotse expedition will begin in the first week of April starting in Kathmandu. You will have a couple of days for the preparation of goods and equipment and paper works. Afterward, you will take a flight to Lukla from where the real treks start to base camp which takes you around 7 days on foot as per the program. This trip suits those who have previous experiences with a few 7000m peaks or even more. The route progresses through Khumbu icefall. Moving further, we will reach Camp 1 which exists at the top of Khumbu icefall that is surrounded BY crevasses. From Camp 1, we will pass through the lateral moraine to the west ridge that greets us with a close-up view of Lhotse. This place is perfect for Camp 2. Leaving Camp 2, we will reach the Lhotse wall by crossing glaciers and ice cliffs where we will set Camp 3. Camp 4 is located near South Col. From Camp 4, we will proceed through steep rock sections to the summit.
